Craig Johnson encountered a mother grizzly while hiking. The bear mauled him, breaking ribs and puncturing his lung. Johnson stabbed its neck with a pen, forcing it to retreat. He crawled half a mile to a road, where a motorist found him. Surgeons rebuilt his face, and he later advocated for bear safety. The attack underscored the importance of carrying bear spray in wilderness areas.
