An Introduction to Biblical Wisdom, Lecture Fourteen: The Wisdom Literature
This lecture, given by Dr. Alastair Roberts, is lecture fourteen in the lecture series "An Introduction to Biblical Wisdom." The full lecture series is available for purchase here: https://davenantinstitute.org/biblical-wisdom-lectures
The books commonly classed together as Wisdom Literature are unified by their special interest in the concept of wisdom. This interest can be seen most clearly in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, but it can also be seen at a key moment in the book of Job, when Job reflects at length on the source of wisdom. Martin Luther observed that in the Psalms, we have the entirety of the Bible transposed into a different key, and many Psalms individually are highly concerned with wisdom. How do the books of Wisdom Literature teach us wisdom in their many diverse literary forms? And how does that wisdom in turn help us read Scripture in its entirety?
