The Complete History of Laudanum at High Society Balls: Regency Britain's Secret Addiction
Hey guys! We’re now live on Spotify 🎧

In Regency Britain, elegant ballrooms and glittering chandeliers concealed a quiet and powerful addiction. Laudanum an opium-based tincture widely sold as medicine was consumed across every level of society, including the aristocratic circles that defined high society during the early 19th century.
Made from opium dissolved in alcohol, laudanum was commonly prescribed for pain, insomnia, anxiety, and a wide range of everyday ailments. It was inexpensive, legal, and readily available at apothecaries, which meant that members of Regency high society often carried it discreetly in small bottles or medicine cases. At fashionable gatherings and late-night social events, the drug was sometimes used to calm nerves, dull physical discomfort, or cope with the pressures of elite social life. Because the addictive nature of opium was not yet fully understood, long-term dependence became widespread among both men and women.
