2024: Derek and Mike

“And Mystic Ramen for dinner whenever we come up,” DC requested weeks ago when we were planning their visit. It had been a tumultuous time. In a brief few months, his father was diagnosed with Cancer, and despite initial hope, his father passed the same day as Uncle Marty, practically twelve hours apart. It was astonishingly fast. During these past few months we had been in very frequent contact. Now that all the duties were done and services were complete, they dropped in on their way back from London to Annapolis.

In the late afternoon, I showed them around a little bit. I was thinking of taking them to see some of our famous waterfalls, but the heat kept us mostly indoors. Instead, we went to the Farmer’s Market for home made sodas from Eldercamp, all of us choosing different flavours. I bought them some Madam Bonbon’s chocolate to take back with them, and even some White Rabbit candy and Kopiko sweets.

After dinner we relaxed and chatted while I played random movies in the background, talking until well past bedtime.

“You must be just done. The hospitals, the waiting, the sleepless nights, being sick, the travel back and forth.” I said. Despite them riding rough emotional waves, I very glad to be together, even briefly. A few weeks ago, I told Mike how grateful I was to have him by DC’s side provided his steadfast support, because I know times like these are also challenging for those in the circle of support.

“I’m exhausted.” Derek admitted. Despite that, the chat was always animated and exuberant - as it often is with DC. And accompanying our conversation was much welcome embracing, the warmth of which encouraged us to share thoughts and tell our stories.

“Come to Annapolis, you’ll get the red carpet.” Mike said.

But I said, “Spending time with you is the red carpet.”

Whenever I am next in their company, it will not be soon enough.
