Outback – Cameron Corner – Merty Merty – Mount Hopeless – Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

Am 20.02.2020 starten wir in Cameron Corner. Das Roadhouse Cameron Corner liegt im Outback und im Bundesstaat Queensland, direkt am Dreiländereck Queensland/NSW/South Australia. Es ist ein spezieller Ort uns hat es sehr gut hier gefallen. Unsere erste Etappe führt uns auf den Track Cameron Corner – Merty Merty ca. 120 km zum Zeitpunkt unsere Fahrt nur zugelassen für 4WD Fahrzeuge. Wir wurden vorher gewarnt es wäre schwierig, wegen der Sand Verwehungen. Aber wir sind gut durchgekommen. Es ging durch die Strzelecki Wüste. Ab Merty Merty sind wir auf den Strzelecki Track abgebogen ca. 180 km bis zur Abbiegung Mount Hopeless. Das Wellblech auf dieser Gravelroad war schon heftig. Es sind uns auf dem ganzen Stück 7 Roadtrains begegnet. Ab Mount Hopeless geht es auf dem gleichnamigen Track ca. 180 km Richtung Arkaroola. Wir fahren größtenteils auf dem Gebiet der Moolawatana Station. Zuerst durch endlose Geröllwüste und später erscheinen am Horizont die nördlichen Flinders Rangers bzw. Gammon Ranges. Es begegnen uns die ersten Rinder. Wir übernachten völlig alleine an einem Creek ca. 100 km vor Arkaroola. Wir haben einen fantastischen Sternen Himmel nur einen Minengelände in der Ferne ist das einzige menschliche Licht. Am nächsten Tag den 21.02.2020 geht es auf die restlichen 100 km nach Arkaroola. Der Track ist ausgewaschen durch den Regen der letzten Woche. Wir kommen am Nachmittag im Wildschutzgebiet von Arakroola an. Hier gab es von 1860-1863 eine Kufpermine und die Station wurde 1935 eingezäunt. Im Jahre 1968 übernahm die Familie Sprigg das Gebiet als privates Wildschutzgebiet. Heute gibt es hier ein Motel, ein Campingplatz, eine kleine Tankstelle. Es geht sehr viel um den Schutz der Gelbfuss Felsen Wallabys. Doug der Sohn des Gründers und heutige Eigentümer betreibt 2 Sternwarten und bietet abends Ausflüge zu diesen Sternwarten an ein tolles Erlebnis. Wir waren begeistert von Arkaroola fantastischer Ort.

On February 20th, 2020 we start in Cameron Corner. The Roadhouse Cameron Corner is located in the outback and in the state of Queensland, directly on the border triangle of Queensland / NSW / South Australia. It is a special place and we enjoyed it very much. Our first stage leads us to the track Cameron Corner - Merty Merty approx. 120 km at the time our trip is only approved for 4WD vehicles. We were warned beforehand it would be difficult due to the sand drifts. But we got through well. It went through the Strzelecki desert. From Merty Merty we turned onto the Strzelecki Track approx. 180 km to the Mount Hopeless turn. The corrugated iron on this gravel road was already violent. We encountered 7 roadtrains all over the piece. From Mount Hopeless, the track of the same name goes approx. 180 km towards Arkaroola. We mostly drive in the Moolawatana station area. First through endless scree desert and later the northern Flinders Rangers or Gammon Ranges appear on the horizon. We meet the first cattle. We spend the night alone on a creek about 100 km from Arkaroola. We have a fantastic starry sky just a minefield in the distance is the only human light. The next day, February 21, 2020, we will travel the remaining 100 km to Arkaroola. The track is washed out by the rain of the past week. We arrive at the Arakroola Game Reserve in the afternoon. There was a kufpermine from 1860-1863 and the station was fenced in 1935. In 1968 the Sprigg family took over the area as a private wildlife sanctuary. Today there is a motel, a campsite, a small gas station. It is very much about protecting the yellow-footed rock wallabies. Doug the son of the founder and current owner runs 2 observatories and offers excursions to these observatories in the evening for a great experience. We loved Arkaroola's fantastic place.
