Interview series #systemdesign #technicalinterview #codingproblems #developerlife #learning
We unlock our phones using Face ID or fingerprint hundreds of times…
But have you ever wondered HOW it actually works? 🤔📲
And here’s the scary question:
If someone hacks your phone…
can they steal your real face or fingerprint image? 👀
The answer is NO. 🤯
Your phone doesn’t directly store your actual face or fingerprint photo.
🛑 Because that would be a massive security risk.
Instead, your phone converts your biometrics into a unique mathematical pattern using cryptography and secure hardware.
🛠️ Here’s what happens behind the scenes:
1️⃣ Your phone scans your face or fingerprint.
* Face ID uses infrared sensors + thousands of invisible dots to create a 3D depth map.
* Fingerprint sensors detect unique ridge patterns from your finger.
2️⃣ That data is transformed into a mathematical representation.
NOT a normal image.
3️⃣ The data is stored inside a highly secure isolated chip:
🍎 Secure Enclave (iPhone)
🤖 Titan M / Secure Processor (Android)
This secure chip is separated from the main operating system.
Even iOS or Android itself cannot directly access your biometric data.
4️⃣ Every time you unlock your phone, a fresh scan is converted into math again and compared locally inside the secure chip.
The chip only responds with:
✅ MATCH
or
❌ NO MATCH
Your real biometric data never leaves your device. 🔒
🧠 This is one of the best real-world examples of:
* Cryptography
* Edge Computing
* Hardware-level security
* Decentralized authentication
That’s why biometric unlock is:
⚡ insanely fast
📶 works offline
🔒 privacy focused
