Use MURS radios on your next camping trip.

If you want portable radio communications, your options are pretty much limited to hand-held CB radio, GMRS, (General Mobile Radio Service), FRS (Family Radio Service), or MURS (Multi Use Radio Service), Or if you have an Amateur Radio (Ham) License, you always have that option.

While many of these systems are known, MURS is pretty much still an unknown, but is a good fit for short distance (under 2 miles) communications around the campground.

Of course, there is your cellphone, but we are often way out in the woods when we are camping, and maybe only have a single cell tower that will connect, or have marginal or no service. And when the weekend comes, a full campground of people means the towers may be overloaded.

Fortunately, MURS radios are relatively inexpensive, and an external antenna can be used to increase the range somewhat.

For more information about MURS, here is a link to the FCC, which provides the official information on this service, and requirements for use: https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/bureau-divisions/mobility-division/multi-use-radio-service-murs
