The Viking Berserker Who Was Outlawed — Because His Own Side Was More Afraid of Him Than the Enemy

Norse berserkers were elite warriors who fought in a trance-like rage — biting shields, ignoring wounds, charging without formation. They were valuable in open battle. They were catastrophic everywhere else. Icelandic law codes from the 11th century explicitly outlawed berserker behavior — not in battle, but in peacetime. A berserker who entered the rage state during a dispute, market, or feast was subject to exile. Several sagas record berserkers being outlawed specifically because their own communities couldn't control them between wars. The weapon Norse armies depended on most was also the one they had to legally restrain. The fiercest warriors alive were too dangerous to live near.
