Try Adding a Full Orchestra to Metal Without It Becoming Background Noise

Producing a standard metal song is straightforward enough — drums, bass, guitars, and a vocalist with his balls in a vice. But have you ever tried adding a synth and a full orchestra into that mix? And not as background wallpaper like most metal bands do — as an essential, load-bearing part of the arrangement?
That's exactly what Dimmu Borgir pulled off with Eonian. The orchestra isn't decoration — it's structural. That level of sonic architecture is a completely different challenge from just stacking more distorted guitars.
And if you want to go even further, look at Merzbow and the noise genre. They abandoned Western music conventions entirely and started reinventing what music even means. Finding music in that? That is real complexity.
