Panama's Beauty #23 Escape to Panama, a Good or Bad idea? Now we live inside of the beautiful Chagres National park, 25 min from Tocumen international AP - up into the surrounding mountains, only 55 min from the city, at an altitude 3,000ft (highest point in S. Panama) The temperature is cool to warm (never hot!) year round, no need for AC's. It's a Audubon society world birding hot-spot and it's actually just over the continental divide, so it has different vegetation to the Pacific coastal communities. It's a very safe place, impossible to enter other than through the main security gate (The Jungle is too dense) which is very well controlled with a police station there too, so it's very safe. No need for bars on windows, fences etc. This is the first (older) of 2 major communities founded by the MELO group, the newer one being Altos del Maria on the Pacific This is where many of it's most successful citizens (and some fortunate expats) have their weekend (or in some cases, permanent) homes. Homes can be bought here for $120K - $500K, and a really nice home costs around 170K, whilst a HUGE villa will cost $290K. That's a fraction of what similar homes cost in the city and all of these homes have BIG properties! Panama is a Blessed land whose people built it with hard work - often against tremendous odds! Note: It's a good article, but a little out of date now (2020) as there's a brand new (very nice) road up the mountain to Cerro Azul now and they're installing a brand new Electrical distribution system. Also, 12 Med Eggs are $1.85, local beers range from 0.45c to 0.55c, and a freshly baked French loaf is 0.70c. Cell phone plans are as low as $15pm, Internet $15 to $30pm and Melo's COMASSA store (on-site) now has a Banistmo ATM in it - but most ATM cards will work) and Home rental is $700 - $1,000pm for a nice 3 Bedroom home, less for a 2 bedroom Home! Community fees are $70pm, Water $10pm, Electricity (don't need AC's) is $50pm and Propane around $10pm. The Metro (subway) now runs through 24 Decembre (the closest town) so one could just drive down the mountain, park your car there, and for 50c each, sit back and enjoy the view while the modern train takes you to the city. There's also now a TOLL highway ($1) from 24 Decembre, that links in with other highways so that you can drive all the way to Coronado, San Carlos, El Valle, Playa Blanca and other Pacific areas without even encountering traffic lights! On a good day (not rush hour) We can get to Coronado from Cerro Azul in 1 hour and 50 minutes! Don't try that in rush hour, though. So it is we split our months between Cerro Azul and Coronado - since half-way there, lives one of our sons and his family, and as grand-parents, we like that a lot, as we break our Journey, visit with them, enjoy a beer, then continue on for another 45 minutes to get to the sea-side! Bonus!
