How To ROCK Your CHEST VOICE! - How To Belt - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Much of today's singing has moved away from big powerful vocals.
Instead, an emphasis is placed on singing lightly, airy and a reliance on falsetto.
This is partly because of a shift in styles of singing over the past
50 years, and partly because people have been sold the idea that singing lighter will "save" your voice.
This couldn't be further from the truth.
If you "pamper" a muscle in your body (which is precisely what the voice is, a group of muscles), it will atrophy (shrink and get weak) over time.
We must think of the voice like building a house.
We first lay down a strong foundation for our voices (starting with our chest voice) and then start "adding rooms" to our house over time.
The way to do this isn't by "pampering, favoring or wimping out" our chest voice, but instead to BUILD it!
Now I think it's important to understand what Chest Voice is.
In Bel Canto/Appoggio (opera), the term "Chest Voice" is defined as any part of the voice that "resonates" in the area of your chest.
This is true for Bel Canto/Appoggio's definition of "Head Voice" as well (anything that resonates in your head).
While that may sound like a reasonable explanation, I believe these definitions illusive and ambiguous (hard to understand and identify).
I have redefined these terms to be easily understood and recognized.
I want you to think of your chest voice as your "Call" register. This can extend from the level / register you speak, all the way to "calling out" to someone from afar.
Within this "Call Register" (also known as a "Broadway Belt," where we get the term "Belting"), there is a "shifting" (so to speak) from our speaking voice into this Call / Belting register.
This area is called "Primo Passaggio" or "The First Passageway."
The goal, is to safely "shift gears" from our speaking register into our call/belting register.
So think of your voice like a finely tuned car engine with various gears to get you to various speeds and "torque" of your engine.
Once you learn how to control this engine, you can keep your voice strong and sing in many styles safely with amazing freedom.
In my video, I walk you through, step by step what it takes to do this.
I also have a singing course called "How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else" for those interested in taking their studies further.
