Paint Like John Beckley

Goal: Students will be expected to listen to a song and use it as their inspiration to create a colorful piece of abstract artwork. They will also be asked to use some techniques that the artist John Beckley uses.

Grade level: 6th - 8th

Time Frame: 5 days

Learning objectives:

1. Student will be able to (SWBAT) analyze a painting by John Beckley to determine various techniques used in his paintings.
2. SWBAT express feelings inspired by music through their artwork.
3. SWBAT create and explain a piece of abstract artwork.
4. SWBAT utilize a variety of painting techniques (masking, brushing, dry-brushing, pouring, dripping, etc.) to create an original composition.

TEKS: (based on Fine Arts TEKS for 6th grade art)
Fine Arts: c(1)ABCD, c(2)ABC, c(4)AB

Materials:
Canvas (16” x 20”)
Acrylic paint
Paint brushes
Squeeze bottle
Masking tape
Various other materials (ex. Bubble wrap, plastic bag, pallet knife, etc.)

Procedure:
1. Teacher will show a short presentation about John Beckley.
2. Students will choose a song to inspire their painting.
3. Students will work to create an abstract painting based on the song they chose.
