Today I'm going to show you how to make Easter Bread step by step. Gather your ingredients and cook with me.

Ingredients:
1 Packet active dry yeast
6 c. All purpose flour, plus extra for kneading
2/3 c. Sugar
1 1/3 c. milk
6 T. unsalted butter
1 t. Salt
3 large eggs, lightly beat 2 eggs for the recipe and use the remaining egg for egg wash.
1 - 2 T. Candy decoration

Directions:
Optional - Dye 5 uncooked Eggs (any color you like)
Pour 1/3 . warm water (110 degrees F) into the bowl of a stand mixer. Gently whisk in the yeast. I T. of the flour and 1 T. of the sugar. Set aside in a warm place until bubbly, 5 - 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until bubbles start to form around the edges. Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the butter, sugar and the salt. Set aside to cool.
Fit the mixer with the paddle attachment, set the mixer on medium-low speed and pour the milk mixture into the yeast mixture. Add the 2 beaten eggs. Gradually mix in the remaining flour and beat until a soft dough forms. Increase the speed to medium high and bet until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and forms a ball. (the dough will be sticky)
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead adding more flour as needed until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Put the dough in a lightly buttered large bowl, cover and place in a warm spot to rise until doubled in size. (about 1.5 hours)
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and transfer to a lightly floured surface. Cut into 3 equal parts. (I cut the dough in half when I made this recipe.)Gently roll out each piece into a 16 - 18 inch long rope. transfer the roped to the prepared baking sheet. Press the ropes together at one end, braid them then gently tuck the ends together. You can form a loaf or a wreath. Don't braid to tight because you want to be able to insert the eggs. Cover and let rise until double in side, about 1 hour.
Preheat over to 350 degrees F. Brush the entire loaf with the remaining beaten egg. Scatter the candy on top. Bake until the loaf is dark golden brown, 50 - 60 minutes. Let cool before slicing.
Note: You can add lemon flavoring and zest to the bread. This is very delicious.

I hope you enjoy this recipe. I make it every year for our church's St. Joseph Table.
God Bless.
