United States Marines Firing the M107 .50 caliber Sniper Rifle / Anti-Materiel Rifle
The M107 Semi-Automatic Anti-Materiel Rifle (SASR) is a legendary staple of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) arsenal. While often referred to as a "sniper rifle," its primary design intent is anti-materiel—meaning it’s built to disable engines, communications equipment, and lightly armored vehicles rather than just anti-personnel tasks.
The M107 was specifically refined for the military to be more durable and reliable in harsh environments than its predecessors.
Recoil Reduction: To keep the massive .50 BMG round from bruising the shooter's shoulder, it features a dual-chamber "V-shaped" muzzle brake and a heavy-duty dual-spring recoil mechanism.
Optics: It is typically paired with the Leupold Mark 4 ultra-high-power scope, often equipped with the BORS (Barrett Optical Ranging System) to calculate ballistic compensation automatically.
Picatinny Rail: A full-length top rail allows for the mounting of various day/night optics and thermal sights.
Monopod & Bipod: Includes a spike-adjustable bipod and a rear monopod for extreme stability during long-range observation and engagement.
Primary Roles in the USMC
In a Marine Scout Sniper platoon, the M107 serves a very specific set of purposes:
Anti-Materiel Operations: Taking out "hard" targets like parked aircraft, radar dishes, or unexploded ordnance (EOD).
Counter-Sniper: Its ability to penetrate walls and cover makes it an effective tool for rooting out enemy marksmen hiding in fortified positions.
Long-Range Interdiction: Stopping vehicles at checkpoints by targeting the engine block from a safe distance.
