How to Change the Fuel Filter on a 7.3 diesel
For safety, make sure you have the keys in your pocket so someone else doesn't try to start the motor while your under the hood.
The change interval on the fuel filter is 15,000 miles. I only had 14,000 on this one and it looked over due.
The lid screws off counterclockwise. Some filters have a star drive in the middle, some have a square, some just have the slots, some have a top that you can put a socket on. Depending on the design, you may need to use a 1/2 drive, oil filter wrench, channel locks in the top slots, or whatever you have to use to get the lid off. If the old filter lid is separate from the filter, keep the lid because the next filter you buy may not come with a lid.
If you agitate the trash in the bottom of the bowl with a small brush, you can wash it out of the drain with diesel fuel. Be careful if you have an early 99 or earlier. There is a heater wire in the bottom that is pretty easy to damage.
I keep the old lid gasket (they are different for each brand) because I had one leak really bad one time. So if you like to play it safe, put it in a Ziploc and put it in your glove box.
1:46 This is the gasket off of one of my old filters that I keep in my glove box.
The fuel filter I used in the video is a NAPA 3818 (same as a WIX 33818). I like the 1 inch socket lid. There is NO separate screen like on the Motorcraft filter. The screen is supposed to be made into the filter. WIX took advantage of that and made the filter bigger. I'm not sure I like not having the water separator screen.
I called multiple dealers, parts houses, and checked the web. But I haven't been able to find torque specs for the lid. If you read the Motorcraft filter directions, it says to tighten until the lid contacts the housing. I assume that is to keep you from crushing the gasket. Mine was close to bottoming out at 15 ft-lbs and definitely bottomed out at 20 ft-lbs. If anybody finds the torque specs, let me know where you found them so I can let people know.
If you buy a Dorman lid (also uses a 1 inch socket) to use with the Motorcraft filter element, be sure to check the gasket surface. Mine had a small casting mark. I carefully filed it down.
