Disconnect is likely to be the surprise of the Venice Film Festival. Director Rubin's first fiction film debut, this movie looks powerfully and intimately at the impact of cyber communications and cyber crime. The invisible world of the Internet and its chat-rooms claims its victims in a very real world. Cyber sex, cyber fraud and death are real dangers. Lives are interrupted, dismantled and irreparably damaged.
Screenwriter Andrew Stern (Return to Me) and a high caliber cast under Henry Alex Rubin's (Murderball) direction provide a painful but hopeful exploration of how the cyber world of cell phones and ipads indelibly changes the way we communicate with each other, how easily humans seek to exploit and allow themselves to be exploited.
