WHY OPERA?
February, 16 2019
Julia Bederova, Andrea Breth, Vladimir Jurowski, Stephen Langridge, Nadja Michael, Nicholas Payne, Raphaël Pichon, Alexander Titel, Mark-Anthony Turnage
The establishment of the Stanislavsky Music Theatre marked the beginning of what is now considered as the “director’s opera” phenomenon: it united music projects of Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, two principal Russian directors and theorists of the XX century theatre. The 100th anniversary of the Music Theatre gives an opportunity to return to its conceptual foundation, which unexpectedly became relevant for the state of the art of opera around the globe. Opera is yet again a trigger of important artistic and social processes and discussions.
Moreover, the history of the Stanislavsky Music Theatre highlights the main clashes inside the opera genre: the two founding directors viewed the role of a director in the opera differently, had different attitude to contemporary repertoire, expressed different degree of respect to the score, etc.
Staging or composition, classic repertoire or contemporary works, academic theatres or non-conventional spaces, the intrigue remains: why opera is still relevant and attracts the most influential authors? Why opera?
