In 1977, a well-established Dr. Wallach came across the first recognized case of non-human cystic
fibrosis. The patient was a selenium-deficient Rhesus monkey. At the time, Dr. Wallach was a scientist at
the Emory University Yerkes National Primate Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to his discovery, cystic
fibrosis was thought to be a congenital disease only present in humans.
