Thinking of applying to a postgraduate or doctoral programme in peace and conflict studies? Hear from two PhD candidates at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago about their application process.

About National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies Student and Community Association:

National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies Student and Community Association is a graduate student club at the University of Otago. The club is grounded in bi-cultural and multi-cultural values and principles, the club support students studying at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (NCPACS) and engage the NCPACS, the wider university, and the community in justice, peace, and conflict transformation efforts, projects and initiatives.

About Kalika Kastein:

Kalika Kastein is a PhD candidate in Peace and Conflict Studies and social media coordinator for the University of Otago's student-led postgraduate association. She also works as a communications consultant for the United Nations. She has previously worked as a public school teacher on Hawaiʻi Island.

About David Whitty:

David Whitty is of Fijian heritage, presently based in Hawaii. Influenced by his work in civil society, he is currently studying peace education as a peacebuilding mechanism, drawing from the literature in considering a possible model for Fiji built on Fijian principles, that informs curriculum within the Fijian education system. He hopes that his work will influence a sustainable culture of peace for future generations.

About José Barzola:

José Barzola is the Principal and Founder of Peacebuilding LLC, dedicated to building collaborative communities through inclusive dialogue, conflict transformation, and sustainable partnerships. With over 20 years of experience in student development, academic affairs, and cross-sector leadership, he empowers individuals and organizations to create peaceful, resilient environments.
