Nine’s ‘slothful’ history of chequebook journalism | Media Bites

The ‘squalor’ of buying a scoop. Nine’s Sydney Morning Herald takes aim at Seven for chequebook journalism but overlooks parent company, Nine Entertainment, and its history of paying for stories.

In the wake of the Seven Spotlight Bruce Lehrmann exclusive, the Herald says, ‘buying a story is slothful’ and ‘undermines good journalism’.

But in its scathing editorial the Herald – which is owned by Nine - fails to mention Nine’s 60 Minutes helped pioneer chequebook journalism and recently paid two million dollars for an exclusive interview.

Bite-sized media criticism for a mid-week Media Watch fix. Paul Barry offers a lighter take each Thursday night.
