I don't own any rights for the song or any part of it. Don't expect me to own.

"Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam" is an original song by The Vaselines (they are very punk rock, btw) song from their album "The Way Of The Vaselines" (1992). On this release, the song is listed as "Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam." On another Vaselines album, "All The Stuff & More" (1992), the song is called "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam." On Nirvana's "Lvi At The Paramount" and "Unplugged", it's "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam".

Kurt was fond of The Vaselines, and once described the band's members Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee as his "favorite songwriters in the whole world". Prior to "Unplugged", Nirvana recorded two covers of The Vaselines' songs, "Molly's Lips" and "Son Of A Gun", those are on "Incesticide".

As for "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam", Kurt described it as "a rendition of an old Christian song". The most well-known performance is probably from the "Unplugged", but they also performed it during their normal full-blown electric shows.

This version is from the Paramount show in Seattle on 31.10.1991 which was released as DVD in 2011. Nirvana's Paramount performance was the third of three shows in the Pacific Northwest with Mudhoney, and the final show of the North American leg of their "Nevermind" tour before the band departed for Europe. The three concerts, which also featured shows in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Canada, had been booked two months earlier and were originally to feature Mudhoney as the headliners. However, the surprising success of "Nevermind", which had been released the previous month, led to Nirvana being moved to the headlining spot. The Seattle show, which also featured Bikini Kill on the bill, also had to be moved from the smaller Moore Theatre to the Paramount due to the demand for tickets.

"Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" was an opener. Nirvana's performance featured a typical setlist of the time, with material from "Nevermind" and the band's 1989 debut album "Bleach", as well as setlist regulars "Aneurysm," "Been a Son" and the 1990 single, "Sliver." And an early version of "Rape Me," which Kurt had written while "Nevermind" was being mixed,

The show was filmed by a video crew the band's co-manager, John Silva, had hired for $250,000. Kurt had invited Ian Dickson and Nikki McClure, two friends of his from Olympia, Washington, to dance on stage, and they wore shirts that read "Girl" and "Boy," respectively.

English music journalist Everett True, a friend of Kurt's, described the Paramount show as "the end of an era" that showed that "incontrovertibly, Nirvana was now big news." Seattle photographer Charles Peterson, acclaimed for his role in documenting the rise of the city's grunge scene, recalled that "the record label, unbeknownst to Nirvana, had set up a big film shoot. There were six guys all clad in black running around with compact 35mm movie cameras and I was like, 'This is the beginning of the end.' It was so unfair to their home audience because it stilted the performance. It reeked of money".

Now, a couple of words on tuning. I don't have an official release on my laptop, so I used the audio track from the bootlegged version of the Paramount show ("Into The Black" compilation, disc 3) which I do have. It seems like this bootlegged track is a bit slower and the pitch is lower than in the official track. I had to tune my bass about 1/4 step lower (halfway between E and E flat). If you want to play to this exact track you'll probably need to do the same.

But if you are going to play along with the official audio track, I'd suggest you have your bass in the normal, proper standard E tuning. Or maybe even a bit higher, I don't know. But the tab will still be good, all the same.

Lyrics:

Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam
Sunbeams are not made like me

Don't expect me to cry
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for thee

Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam
Sunbeams are not made like me

Don't expect me to cry
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for thee

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for thee

Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam
Sunbeams are not made like me

Don't expect me to cry
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for thee
