Hantavirus and Lassa Fever virus - Noel Tordo

This video provides a snapshot of what is known and debated about hantaviruses and arenaviruses, with a focus on Lassa fever virus. Dr. Noel Tord, director of the Institut Pasteur of Guinea in Conakry, explains the ecology and rodent reservoirs, the biology of segmented genomes and their reassortment potential, the history of emergence (from Korean hemorrhagic fever to the American cardiopulmonary syndrome), differences in pathogenicity between the Old and New Worlds, and animal-to-human transmission cycles. He also presents data on geographic distribution and disease burden, risks (including pregnancy), imported cases, and the status of countermeasures: there are no available vaccines, and ribavirin is used only early in Lassa.
