A Fireside Conversation With Dr. Howard Fuller

On March 18, we hosted a free virtual watch party for a powerful new PBS documentary about Dr. Howard Fuller — civil rights organizer, former Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, architect of the parent choice movement, and Special Advisor to The Agentic Institute. For years, Energy Convertors has worked directly with underserved students and families — equipping them with the awareness, the tools, and the sense of duty to act on their own behalf. That work is real, it is documented, and it has changed lives across California, Louisiana, Texas, Wisconsin, and Indiana. But it was always meant to become something larger.

That means training students as legitimate participatory action researchers who generate peer-reviewed knowledge about their own communities. It means equipping parents and families as informed advocates who can navigate systems rather than be consumed by them. It means developing school and community leaders with the frameworks and language to build cultures of agency from the inside.

Now, it means establishing The Agentic Institute as a leading academic and practitioner voice on agency — publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at national conferences, and building a body of research that takes underserved students and families seriously as the experts on their own lives.
