June kicked summer off to a glorious start with Do West Fest filling the streets of Toronto’s west end with fun-starved people and the savoury aromas of barbecued street food. And lots and lots of music. Wavelength hosted the album release for Anishnaabe indie rockers Ombiigizi in the back room of The Garrison and it felt like an unofficial extension of the celebrations - saying, “we’re here, we made it.”
21-year-old Toronto singer/songwriter Giuliana Mormile aka Kicksie hit the stage with a snazzy five-piece band clad in hoodies, hats and hoop shirts. The inclusion of acoustic guitar further sweetened their pop-punk and emo-inspired indie tunage, fully embracing their ‘00s upbringing. The enthusiastic crowd surfed (metaphorically at least) on the nostalgia wave, everyone grinning ear to ear.
