In this video essay, I’m going back to the movie that changed animation forever: Toy Story. Before Toy Story 5 brings Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the gang back to the big screen, I wanted to revisit the original film and talk about why it still means so much to me all these years later.

My thesis for this video is simple: Toy Story taught me how to share love.

When I was younger, Toy Story was a fun movie about toys coming to life. But as I’ve gotten older, become a father, and continued to grow with these characters, the movie has changed for me. It is not just about Woody being jealous of Buzz Lightyear. It is not just about Andy’s toys trying to get back home. It is about learning that love is not something you lose when someone else is loved too.

Woody’s journey in Toy Story is one of insecurity, jealousy, fear, and eventually acceptance. He believes Buzz Lightyear’s arrival means he is being replaced, forgotten, and pushed aside. But what Toy Story slowly reveals is that love can grow. Andy loving Buzz does not mean he stops loving Woody. Sharing love does not make it weaker — it makes it bigger.

That idea has followed me throughout my life. Through friendships, family, marriage, fatherhood, and even my own relationship with movies, Toy Story has become a reminder that love is not meant to be possessed. It is meant to be shared. And as I revisit this original Pixar masterpiece before Toy Story 5, I wanted to explore why this movie still feels timeless, emotional, and deeply personal.

This Toy Story video essay dives into the themes of jealousy, identity, friendship, childhood, growing up, and the fear of being replaced. I also talk about Woody and Buzz’s relationship, Pixar’s groundbreaking storytelling, why Toy Story still holds up, and how the film’s message has changed as I’ve gotten older.
