Kaaba. The dream came true after 45 years.
Step into my home and you'll be greeted this beautiful artwork titled "The Path of Truth" right away. Back in 2002, I finally got the chance to fulfil my childhood dream of visiting Mecca. It was something I promised my father’s uncle Huseynqulu I would do. Thankfully, it all came true in back 2002. When I prayed for the first time in Mecca, I remembered my great-grandmother, Kerbelai Meshadi Molla Sugra Khanum, who I was named after. Looking at the prayer mat, I felt inspired to dedicate an artwork to this special place.
In this piece, I've included symbols from the Muslim world. For example, I placed nine roses under the Kaaba and nineteen around it, which are important numbers in our beliefs. The number 9 is considered the highest and most significant number in the Quran, because the number 10 is just a 1 and 0. Furthermore, In Islam, there's a story that where a drop of Prophet Muhammad's sweat fell, a bush of white roses grew, representing purity. I always think of my flowers as prototypes of people. In this artwork, the 9 flowers under the Kaaba are following an illuminated path, meanwhile the 19 roses around it are in the dark. This alludes to the name of the painting “The path of Truth”, and highlights the importance of following God’s path. I used wheat from the Kaaba and sand from the mountain of Adam and Eve in this artwork. It's really special to me because it fulfills a dream I've had for so long. Going to Mecca is a big deal for Muslims, and I thank God that I got to experience it.
