In football, the Belgian national team beat Macedonia, taking an important step to securing at least second place in the World's Qualifying Group A. National team coach Marc Wilmots fielded 6 players who are active in the Premier League.
"We were lucky", Marc Wilmots told reporters after the match. He was right. Belgium - also dubbed the Red Devils although this time they played in black in Skopje - could have been 2-0 down after just 5 minutes, but miraculously escaped twice, also thanks to excellent efforts by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Belgium climbed ahead on 26 minutes when midfielder Kevin De Bruyne moved past defender Aleksandar Lazovski and kept his cool to beat goalkeeper Tomislav Pacovksi from close range, 0-1. Macedonia striker Goran Pandev missed a chance to equalise just before the break.

Belgium had a better control of the match after the break. Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard converted a penalty to make it 0-2, the final score. Belgium started with 6 Premier League players: Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, Jan Vertonghen and Moussa Dembele of Tottenham, Marouane Fellaini of Everton, Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke (photo) and Eden Hazard. Captain Vincent Kompany of Manchester City was out injured but should be fit to play next Tuesday.

No Belgian league players in starting 11
Thibaut Courtois and Kevin De Bruyne, who played a crucial role in the outcome of the match, are playing for Atlético Madrid and Werder Bremen respectively, but are in fact on loan from Chelsea. Keeping this into account, the Belgian squad included 8 players who belong to an English club.

The starting 11 didn't have a single player who is active in the Belgian league. Insiders claim that this is the most talented Belgian squad in decades (small photo: Hazard converts penalty to make it 0-2).

Belgium now has 13 points from 5 matches and is equal on points with Croatia in Group A. However, Belgium has the lead in the group thanks to a better goal difference (10-1, compared to 8-2 for Croatia). Belgium still has to travel to Croatia though at a later phase. Next Tuesday, the Red Devils receive Macedonia in Brussels. The sell-out crowd expects nothing else but another win. The enthusiasm for the Belgian national football team has never been so high in more than a decade

The group stage winner qualifies directly for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, while the number 2 faces play-off matches.
