Portland Traffic with BMW i3 Traffic Jam Assist

Demonstration of BMW's Traffic Jam Assist in evening traffic in Portland, Oregon.
My car came standard with Adaptive Cruise Control which reads speeds signs and controls speed and braking.
Traffic Jam Assist adds to this by steering on freeways with well defined lane markings and relatively low speed traffic flow. It's disabled on i3s by default in the US however it's possible to turn it on again through coding and a hardware dongle to verify driver awareness.
This all works from the standard forward looking camera in the windshield and I believe software from BMW's partner Mobileye who formerly produced Tesla's autopilot software.
The ACC software is very solid and I have long since handed over control of speed to the car when on highways or major city roads.
It will take a while longer to handover full confidence to Traffic Jam Assist.
TJA seems to work well on freeways that have good lane markings and heavy traffic moving slowly ( under 40 mph.) What it's clearly NOT designed for is city streets where the lack of lane markings at intersections and the general visual clutter of city streets mean it is continually handling back control to the driver. It's also not designed for high speeds and the software hands back control to the driver at 35 mph by default. (There is an example of it handling control back to me at 0:45 because I haven't interacted with the wheel for too long.)
Overall my assessment is this is a useful feature for drivers who spend a lot of time crawling along in freeway traffic.
