Steve Magnante talks 1949 Mercury Sportsman Woody Wagon selling at Richmond Auctions Oct 24/25th
Steve breaks down this amazing 1949 Mercury Sportsman Woody Wagon that will be auctioned off by Richmond Auctions Oct 24-25. You can register at bid.richmondauctions.com. Here is a description of this lot:
With the conclusion of World War II, Detroit's automakers were quickly redesigning their offerings to give them a much-needed major makeover from their pre-war offerings. It was Ford's Mercury division that took the lead over their parent company in moving the needle, and this 1949 Mercury Sportsman Woody captures this. With its attractive steel body and genuine wood skin, the 1949 Mercury had great features for buyers, such as all-leather interior (Ford had genuine leather only on the seat cushions), twin taillights, and directional signals. While Mercury shared Ford's new independent front suspension and open driveline, it departed from the common engine program of 1946-48 and received a larger, 255 cubic-inch version of the flathead V-8. In all, more than 300,000 were sold, but station wagons comprised only 8,000 units of total production, making them quite rare today. Although the Mercury and Ford bodies are similar, there are many subtle differences such as doors and front-end sheet metal. Most observers will agree that the Mercury body lines flow much more smoothly. A former AACA National First Award winner. Its interior is pristine and has optional equipment such as sun visor, fog lamps, and fender skirts. This is a very rare automobile that still shows well and is ready for another caretaker. VIN: 9CM261120.
