Planet Labs enables real-time AI processing in orbit

Planet Labs has integrated AI image processing directly onboard its Pelican 4 satellite, enabling real-time analysis of Earth observation data from 300 miles above. Using NVIDIA GPUs, the satellite processes high-resolution images in just half a second, identifying objects as small as one foot wide while in orbit. This innovation reduces data latency from hours to minutes, significantly enhancing responsiveness to emergencies like wildfires and floods.

By processing 30 terabytes of data daily in space, Planet Labs is transforming satellites from passive cameras into autonomous intelligence platforms. Their future goals include deploying AI language models aboard satellites to generate automatic alerts, marking a pivotal advancement in Earth observation and disaster response capabilities.
