British PM Sunak announces general election for July 4

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced the UK will hold a general election on July 4th. The news came as a surprise as an election in the autumn seemed more likely.

His Conservative Party is trailing the opposition Labour Party by 20 points in the polls, but some recent good economic news appears to have prompted his decision. Our Europe correspondent Simon McGregor-Wood has the latest
