JOHN DENVER: A Japan Brat

John Denver was one of the most popular singer-songwriters of the 1970s. But little known to most, he was not only an Air Force brat but a Japan Brat.

Born Henry J. Deutschendorf Jr., John was the son of an Air Force pilot. Contrary to popular belief, he did not attend high school in Japan. He spent a part of his early childhood (1949-1952) at Johnson Air Base near Tokyo, where he attended K - 2nd grade at the then all-new Yokota Elementary School on Yokota's housing annex at Johnson Army Air Field in Iruma.

Once he achieved success as a performer, Denver returned to Japan where he was warmly and enthusiastically received by audiences. His love of Japan's culture and people grew. He and his wife Annie adopted a Japanese-American girl, Anna Kate, through a Japanese adoption agency.
