St Edward’s primary school in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire is already home to a herd of goats and a brood of chickens, but the addition of alpacas to the mix has caused controversy. With a new baby alpaca on site, the school now owns four of the exotic animals. All are cared for by the staff and students, with the belief that teaching pupils to care about animals gives them a greater understanding of the environment and the world around them. Well animal activist group PETA do not agree. They’re outraged at the move, and say the addition of alpacas to the school is an act of species-ism. PETA spokesperson Jennifer White joins us in the studio, and we’re live from St Edward’s school where headteacher Stephen McKernan joins us alongside his new alpaca students.
