Turtles Took Over Our Backyard… And They’re Planning Something | Part 1

What looks like a calm, quiet backyard… is actually the beginning of a secret mission.
In this first part of our turtle series, we captured something truly special using trail cameras and handheld footage — Snapping Turtles and Painted Turtles exploring our backyard in search of the perfect nesting site.
At first glance, nothing dramatic seems to happen. No fights. No chaos. Just slow, steady movement.
But look closer…
This is the critical beginning of turtle nesting season, when female turtles leave the safety of the water and begin a careful, instinct-driven search for the perfect place to lay their eggs.

🐢 What You’ll See in This Video:
• Turtles slowly moving across the yard, scanning the terrain
• Close-up footage showing their behavior and body language
• Moments where turtles pause, evaluate, and change direction
• A turtle hilariously covered in grass and dirt — nature’s camouflage… or just a bad fashion choice?
• Subtle but important signs that they are testing potential nesting areas

🌿 What’s Really Happening?
Even though it looks simple, this behavior is incredibly important.
During late spring and early summer, female turtles begin searching for nesting sites, often traveling surprisingly far from water. They prefer:
• Soft, well-drained soil
• Sunny areas for natural incubation
• Safe locations away from predators
This video captures the “searching phase”, which is the first step before digging and laying eggs (coming in Part 2).

🧠 Interesting Turtle Facts:
• The gender of baby turtles depends on temperature — warmer nests produce more females, cooler nests produce more males
• Turtles may spend hours (or even days) searching before choosing the perfect spot
• Many turtles dig test holes before committing to one location
• Less than 1% of baby turtles survive to adulthood
• Once eggs are laid, the mother leaves — no parental care
