watch your step navigating a debris-filled asylum

Our visit to Great Barr Hall, often known locally for its abandoned asylum buildings, was both fascinating and eerie. This historic 18th-century Gothic mansion later became part of St Margaret’s Hospital, a psychiatric institution that gave the site its haunting reputation. The crumbling architecture, overgrown grounds, and silent atmosphere created a powerful sense of stepping back in time.

Walking through the area, we were struck by the contrast between the hall’s former grandeur and its current state of decay. Broken windows, weathered stonework, and hidden pathways added to the mysterious mood. Despite its unsettling history, the site is also beautiful, surrounded by woodland and lakes that make it feel peaceful and isolated.

The visit was an unforgettable experience, combining history, architecture, and a touch of the supernatural. Great Barr Hall offered us a unique glimpse into the past and left us with a lasting impression of both wonder and curiosity
