Spem in Alium - Original Remix
**re-upload as I changed the original mix and now it sounds a lot warmer and the mastering is improved**
I was lucky enough to go to Salzburg during the annual Salzburg Music Festival in 2013 and it was the penultimate day for the group I was with; we’d done our performances in the Mozartplaz and we’d got wind of a choir group performing in one of the smaller churches off of the main cathedral. I didn’t really know what to expect but what happened was a live performance of Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis.
Spem in Alium is comprised of 40 parts, eight choirs of five voices. Recordings don’t do this piece justice. To be in a setting where those choirs are placed around the church gives every audience member a truly unique experience, some parts were heard by some while others weren’t so clear. It was incredible and I’ve been so in awe of a piece of music. In more modern times, it’s the piece of music that Terry Pratchett wishes to listen to when he passes and was also featured in 50 Shades of Grey. Ew to the latter.
I stumbled upon this freely available midi today and thought I’d just play around with it and it turned into this, an orchestral interpretation. To call it a remix feels almost crass, I did none of the sequencing, I only added in some instruments, some effects and some amateur mastering.
This absolutely does no justice to the original piece to be honest. Go listen to it on YouTube or if you can, a live performance. It’s truly spectacular and it’s one of my all time favourite pieces of music.
