Western strategy of increasing the conflict with Russia could lead to a military showdown between nuclear powers, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said at the 10th Xiangshan Security Forum.
"The Western policy of steady escalation of the conflict with Russia carries the threat of a direct military clash between nuclear powers, which is fraught with catastrophic consequences," he said.
"The United States and NATO continue to seriously hope that they will be able to undermine Russia's security and deprive us of the will to resist," the minister added.
However, he believes that the reality in the zone of the special military operation shows that these strategies are futile.
Sergei Shoigu said that the West is attempting to extend the conflict potential of the European crisis to the Asia-Pacific region. "Having provoked an acute crisis in Europe, the West is seeking to spread the conflict potential to the Asia-Pacific region, and in several directions," he said.
He added that "direct involvement in the confrontation between states with nuclear arsenals multiplies strategic risks.".
Tensions in the Asia-Pacific region have been rising recently, fueled by the standoff over Taiwan between the US and China, which considers the self-governing island to be part of its sovereign territory and has conducted numerous military exercises in the area. Washington recently approved the sale of $440 million worth of military equipment to Taiwan, a move strongly condemned in Beijing.
Meanwhile, the Korean Peninsula has emerged as another flashpoint in the region, with North Korea repeatedly conducting missile tests in response to joint South Korea-US military exercises.
