BMW N57 Turbo Failure 40D X5 E70 Borg Warner K26

This twin turbo 40D e70 x5 LCI came in for an engine light and the vehicle with reduced power. A scan with bmw ISTA diagnostics revealed an underboost issue. This turned out to be a defective boost solenoid for the change over flap in the exhaust manifold between the two turbos. When diagnosing this, the vehicle was road tested and boost pressures data logged to confirm the low boost scenario. On road test, the vehicle was heard to have an engine rattle (later diagnosed as a noisy rattling timing chain, see my other videos for info on this) and it also "ran on" close to redline. The throttle was released and the engine continued to rev for a few seconds, whilst the engine diesel knocked and blue smoke emitted from the rear of the car like a James Bond special effect. The inlet pipe into the throttle valve was removed and excessive amounts of oil were found (oil is normal to be found in the inlet boost pipes in a closed circuit breather system setup). Upon inspection of the turbos, the smaller high pressure turbo was found to have carbon build up in the oil feed orifice in the top of the turbo core. The vehicle had approx 90,000km on it, but due to the early timing chain stretch, this vehicle was clearly suffering from having extended oil changes and possibly poor oil was being used. Both turbos were removed and the compressor housings removed to inspect them for other signs of damage and to try attribute which turbo was causing the oil into the inlet.
