Mental Health Nursing Chapter 6: Relationship Development

📘 Chapter Overview

A therapeutic nurse-patient relationship is central to mental health nursing. This chapter introduces the interpersonal dynamics, boundaries, communication skills, and emotional intelligence required to build and sustain that relationship through intentional phases.

Unlike social or casual relationships, the therapeutic relationship has clear goals, professional boundaries, and a defined time frame — and it’s driven by the patient’s needs, not the nurse’s.
