He put a NAIL in his fretboard!? Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's John McEuen — Vault Sessions

#SongbirdsFoundation #VaultSessions #NittyGrittyDirtBand

We are extremely proud to feature American Folk Hero and co-founder of the iconic Nitty Gritty Dirt Band—John McEuen!

In this episode of the Vault Sessions, John discusses turning his guitar into a banjo by putting a nail in the fifth fret (don't try this at home—or do and send us a video). He also talks about how a little brotherly competition sent him down the path to the dark side (to the banjo), his love for DADF#AD tuning, the inspiration of The Dillards, and working with the greats: Vassar Clements, Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Jimmy Martin, Norman Blake, and more.

From the VAULT: John picks a 1941 Martin D-45 (what a beaut!) and a 1927 Gibson TB-Bella Voce banjo on a traditional version of "Soldiers Joy" (8:04) and the classic "Redwing" (12:54).

Stick with us! We have some great players visiting us this year... so click the subscribe button for updates. Coming soon: Eric Gales, a new Eric Johnson, Andy Timmons, Mark Lettieri, Stuart Mathis, and dozens more. These sessions help keep the music alive by helping the Songbirds Foundation raise money to buy guitars for kids… Check out our website to find out more—songbirdsfoundation.org or stop by the Songbirds Guitar & Pop Culture Museum here. in Chattanooga, TN, and visit! Open hours: Wed, Thurs, Sunday 12-6; Fri & Sat 10-6 EST.
