Varlam Shalamov is the author of Kolyma Tales.
They became an important testimony of life in the GULAG
The son of a missionary priest, he himself had left-wing views
As a student, Shalamov participated in a demonstration with the slogan "Down with Stalin!"
He was sentenced to three years in prison.
After his release, he worked as a journalist, published the first story.
But in January 1937 he was again convicted
In the camp Shalamov received another term.
Just for calling Ivan Bunin a Russian classic
In 1956, he was rehabilitated and returned to Moscow
Shalamov described his camp years in the stories that brought him world fame
But he himself was never able to return to normal life,
he always wrote about it in his texts
