Bark Tanning: How To Make Leather

In this video I demonstrate how to make leather the traditional way of Bark Tanning. This is my favorite method of tanning, because the end result is "true" leather. Leather that can be used for stiff materials, leather that can be used for tough footwear, pants or shorts, you name it, bark tanned leather will last it. So for this purpose I have cowhides fleshed and cleaned and in the midst of tanning. It is time to strengthen the bath for the last couple of months of its tanning process by adding more bark. I use Chestnut Oak tree bark, which is an abundant tree and has one of the highest counts of tannins out of most tree barks. The color is a beautiful light brown prior to oiling. All the different types of animal skins will tan faster or take longer depending on the thickness of the hide.
