Tests for cations for IGCSE and O Level Chemistry

9 Jan 2022
**CORRECTION**
2:33 lead hydroxide is SOLUBLE in excess sodium hydroxide because lead hydroxide is amphoteric, and it further reacts with hydroxide to form a soluble complex ion.

It did not appear to be soluble in the video because there was not enough hydroxide added.
Thanks to @Vyash Brijesh and @Muwereza Nakachwa to point this out in their comments, I really appreciate it!

In this video, I am going to show you how to perform chemical tests for the cations aluminium, ammonium, calcium, chromium(III), copper(II), iron(II), iron(III), and zinc. These cation tests are required in IGCSE and O Level Chemistry syllabi.

0:00 Source and reagents
0:35 colourless ions with a few drops of NaOH
1:28 colourless ions with excess NaOH
2:29 colourless ions with a few drops of ammonia
3:30 colourless ions with excess ammonia
4:44 coloured ions with a few drops of NaOH
5:54 coloured ions with excess NaOH
7:43 coloured ions with a few drops of ammonia
8:33 coloured ions with excess ammonia
10:03 ammonium ion
