For a company known for its brilliant games featuring family friendly characters like Pikachu and Super Mario, it’s almost miraculous how little Nintendo understand their own fan base at times.

This is the story of how Nintendo, during one of the bleakest eras in the company’s history managed to chase a trend in gaming and strike gold, while leaving many of their most ravenous consumers frustrated and confused by their tactics.

How small pieces of plastic created lineups across the globe and caused consumers to lose their minds all in the name of completion, myself included.
