Gwanghwamun Square is the real center of Seoul. There is Gwanghwamun Gate in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the castle of old kings, and this huge square is in front of Gwanghwamun.

About 20 years ago, it was just a wide and desolate roadway, but in 2009, it split roads on both sides and built a square in the center. But there was no place to sit, no shade. I remember Gwanghwamun Square at that time as a little cold and dry space.

On August 6, 2022, a new Gwanghwamun Square was created. A wider square was built, leaving only a small road on the side. More people were spending time here than before. There are a lot of places to sit and there are many trees, so you can spend as much time as you want here in a nature-friendly and cool way. It is a good place for anyone to relax while walking in Seoul.

And from late 2016 to early 2017, a huge number of Koreans held protests and rallies here throughout the cold winter. It was to impeach the president at the time when the fatal irregularities were revealed, and eventually the president was impeached. Since then, many Seoulites and Koreans have considered Gwanghwamun Square a more special place.
The Gwanghwamun Square website introduces Gwanghwamun Square like this. Gwanghwamun was destroyed and restored several times by the war and Japanese invasion, but the road in front of Gwanghwamun was still maintained as the central space of Korea. It was the most important place for people to gather, meet, and share news and opinions. And through various modern and contemporary history, it has emerged as a symbol of democracy and a space of harmony.

With the restoration of Gwanghwamun, the road in front of Gwanghwamun in 2009 was first shaped like a square in accordance with the meaning and function of the place. Gwanghwamun Square, which reopened in August 2022, is expected to be loved by citizens as a representative place of Seoul citizens' lives that connects daily life such as rest and walks and festivals and events while inheriting the historical meaning and depth of the road in front of Gwanghwamun.

◆ On the way to Gwanghwamun Square
Gwanghwamun Square is located in front of Gwanghwamun Station on Seoul Subway Line 5, and is about a 5-minute walk from City Hall Station on Line 2. It's not that far from Seoul Station. It is also very close to Cheonggyecheon Square, where Cheonggyecheon Stream begins. Gyeongbokgung Palace and Deoksugung Palace are also very close. Seochon, Jogyesa Temple, and Insadong streets are also walking distances.
