Roger Taylor interview: feeling the rhythm
A healthy or normal pulse feels regular and indicates, like the regular beat of a drum, that the heart is probably in normal heart rhythm.
But if you take your pulse and find that it is uneven or erratic you may either have "atrial fibrillation", a common heart condition that is associated with stroke and heart attacks, or alternatively "benign ectopic beats", which are common and in most cases a variant of normal.
Mr Roger Taylor illustrates the differences between these two extremes using his legendary drum kit.
In May 2013 Haste Academy launches its "feel your pulse" campaign to encourage anyone over the age of 65 to become more aware of the importance of taking your pulse.
There is little point in reporting an abnormal pulse to your Doctor if it can't be looked into within a reasonable time frame, so we have synchronised our local pulse awareness campaign to coincide with the launch of a new innovative arrhythmia service called "HASTENINGS".
This is a community-based arrhythmia screening service available for GPs in the Guildford and Waverley area of Surrey in England. It provides specialist arrhythmia screening at one of four outreach clinics held in GP Surgery's.
If high risk is identified, anticoagulants can be initiated by the GP and if additional specialist input is needed patients are then automatically directed to local arrhythmia clinics held in the Haste wing of Guildford's Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust.
We expect this network to be used by our local population to find high risk cases before a stroke or heart attack ruins their lives.
