Lindy Hop Swing Out Workshop | Foundations and Components

There are many ways to approach the iconic Lindy Hop Swing Out. In this workshop, Lindy Jazz members who already had the foundation prerequisites of 6-count and 8-count triple steps and Passby were coached through the key movements that make up a basic Swing Out.

Rather than rushing straight into the full move, everyone was encouraged to fully understand the shapes and individual components first, so that when they are combined, the Swing Out feels clear, comfortable, and musical.

The workshop focused on these building blocks:
1. 6-Count “Doors”
2. 8-Count “Doors”
(“Doors” is not an official Lindy Hop term — we use it as a simple reference to help visualise the movement.)
3. Exiting into both Open and Close positions
4. Gliding (as taught by the legendary Frankie Manning)
5. Inside Turn variation
6. The Circle
7. A brief recap of the follower’s “Twist Twist” rotational movement

By working step-by-step through these elements, dancers can build a Swing Out that feels relaxed, structured, and responsive rather than rushed or memorised.

Part of the ongoing learning journey with Lindy Jazz.

Understand the shapes. Practise the components. Then let the Swing Out come together naturally.
