━━━ Key terms ━━━

What is a FIPS code?
A FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) code is a unique numeric identifier for a US geographic area. It's built from larger to smaller levels — state, county, tract, block group, block — and a full block-level FIPS code is 15 digits long. Government datasets use FIPS codes to join data across agencies.

What is a GeoID?
A GeoID is the full concatenated FIPS code that identifies a specific Census geography. A 2-digit GeoID represents a state, 5 digits covers a state plus county, 11 digits adds the tract, 12 adds the block group, and 15 digits points to a single Census block. Geocodio returns all of these levels so you can match against any government dataset.

What is a Census block?
A Census block is the smallest geographic unit the US Census Bureau uses to publish data. Blocks are typically bounded by streets, railroad tracks, or rivers, and in cities they often line up with a single city block. Every US address falls inside exactly one Census block, which is why blocks are the foundation for so many other Census geographies.

What is a Census tract?
A Census tract is a small, stable statistical area that usually contains 2,500 to 8,000 people. Tracts are designed to stay consistent across Census years so researchers can track neighbourhoods over time. Each tract sits inside a single county and contains multiple block groups and blocks.
