Heyliker Mame (Holy Mother) is the pre-war tango from Warsaw in Yiddish, recorded originally by Herman Fenigstein for Syrena-Record.
A rainy night, alone, his face starved, the night is dark. Bitter eyes, body trembling with cold, the lips bitten, torn shoes, tortured. A driving wind, no memory remains. Only a remembrance of the orphan's dead home remains.
The mother lost, his misery is hard to understand. Instead of the mother, there's a grave, a tombstone.
Who can understand the love of a holy mother? Her face smiles though deep in her heart is a bitter cry. She doesn't sleep at night hoping her only child will grow up fine and upstanding. Exhausted by her efforts, she worries for her child. (translated by Jane Peppler)
