55 Cancri e is a planet located about 41 light-years away from Earth. It’s much bigger than our planet—about twice the size—and orbits very close to its star. In fact, it goes around its star in less than one Earth day. Because of this, the planet is extremely hot.

At first, scientists thought 55 Cancri e might be made mostly of carbon. Under the planet’s high pressure and heat, that carbon could turn into diamonds. That’s why it was nicknamed the “diamond planet.” However, newer studies suggest it might not have as many diamonds as once believed. Still, it’s made of very unusual materials compared to Earth.

The planet is what’s called “tidally locked,” which means one side always faces the star, while the other side is always in darkness. The side facing the star can be hot enough to melt rock, possibly creating oceans of lava. The dark side is cooler but still very hot.

Recent observations using advanced space telescopes have found signs of gases like carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide around the planet. This means it might have a thin atmosphere, though it’s very different from the air we breathe.

Even if it’s not all diamonds, 55 Cancri e is one of the most mysterious and extreme planets scientists have discovered so far.
